Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, the Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has stated that Jamaat is a progressive and centrist Islamic political party that continuously adapts its policies and programs in line with social, economic, and political realities. He emphasized that the party has always believed in democratic and people-oriented politics.

In an interview with the Indian weekly magazine The Week, he mentioned that although the party was officially banned, its connection with the people was never broken. The results of the 2014 Upazila elections proved that the party remained strong at the local government level and enjoyed continued public support. Following recent court rulings restoring Jamaat’s registration and election symbol, supporters have been reinvigorated and the party is actively preparing for national politics.

Dr. Rahman added that Jamaat is not only prepared but fully ready for the upcoming elections. Victories of its student organization in the student union elections at Dhaka University and other top universities reflect growing trust among young voters. Even while being outside formal electoral politics, the party has never stepped away from democratic participation. In the 2018 national elections, Jamaat allied with the BNP and contested under a joint symbol. This experience has reinforced the importance of unity among democratic forces when democracy is under threat. At the same time, the party has strengthened its organizational structure, reinforced internal discipline, and deepened ties with the grassroots.

He said, “Jamaat-e-Islami is undoubtedly a cadre-based ideological party. However, the core of our ideology is discipline, accountability, transparency, and public service. In today’s political environment, voters value principled politics and trustworthiness over empty promises. In this context, our ideological stance is not a weakness but a strength.”

Regarding engagement with young and first-time voters, Dr. Rahman said, “A generation disillusioned by corruption, failed promises, and ineffective governance strongly resonates with our vision. We see the youth not as a problem, but as partners in national development.” The party prioritizes job creation, skill development, and entrepreneurship so that young people can build dignified careers at home rather than being forced to go abroad.

Responding to critics who claim that Jamaat’s past overshadows its present, Dr. Rahman rejected the notion. He stated that the people of Bangladesh are aware of the party’s history and have repeatedly expressed confidence through the ballot. No party’s past should be used to deny its current democratic participation.
