A memorial service was held today to mark the second death anniversary of Saifuddin Ahmed Monir, former general secretary of the Democratic League-DL and one of the architects of the 1990s student uprising. Speakers at the meeting paid tribute to his contribution, ideals and life of struggle and recalled his role in restoring democracy in the country.

Jatiyabir Janneta Aman Ullah Aman, advisor to the BNP Chairperson, convener of Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP and former state minister, was present as the chief guest at the memorial service.

He said, “Saifuddin Ahmed Monir was a true democracy-loving man. His role in the 1990s movement is still a source of inspiration. Losing such a leader is an irreparable loss for the nation.”

Dr. Fariduzzaman Farhad, Coordinator Nationalist Like-minded Alliance and Chairman NPP, were present as special guests; Jatiyabir Khairul Kabir Khokon, former MP and BNP Joint Secretary General; Jatiyabir Fazlul Haque Milon, former MP and President Gazipur District BNP; and Jatiyabir Nazim Uddin Alam, former MP and BNP Executive Committee Member.
In addition, Shamsul Alam Liton, Convener and Spokesperson Global Bangladeshi Alliance for Human Rights, and Syed Jahangir Alam, former Mayor, Dinajpur Municipality, were present at the memorial service and paid tribute to Saifuddin Ahmed Monir.

The program was presided over by Mr. Mohammad Mahbub Alam, Vice President, Democratic League-DL.

The meeting was moderated by Khokon Chandra Das, General Secretary, Democratic League-DL.

The speakers at the memorial service said that Saifuddin Ahmed Monir was a courageous, selfless and idealistic leader. Under his leadership, the student community united in the anti-dictatorship movement in the 1990s mass uprising. His political philosophy was to dedicate his life to establishing democracy, justice and human rights.

The leaders of the 1990s student movement, top leaders of the Nationalist Like-Minded Alliance and various national leaders also spoke at the meeting. The speakers called for working together to realize Monir's dream.

At the end of the meeting, prayers and supplications were held seeking the forgiveness of his soul.
