Two cubs have been born in a family of zebras at Safari Park in Sreepur, Gazipur. The number of zebras in the park is still 30 including the new born cubs. On Sunday (September 22) and Tuesday (September 24), two new-born cubs were seen walking around with the zebra herd. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park Officer-in-Charge Rafiqul Islam confirmed the matter at 10 am on Wednesday (September 25).
Anisur Rahman, wildlife supervisor of Gazipur Safari Park, said that the zebra is an African four-legged mammal of the Ecuadorian family. Zebra cubs drink mother's milk for 7 to 8 months. They travel in flocks to ensure the safety of new members. which are particularly known for their distinctive black stripes. In the same enclosure of the park live zebras along with giraffes, chitras and maya deer and some other animals. The park authorities take special care to protect the newborn cubs from other animals. A female zebra goes through a gestation period of 12 to 13 months. Although it lives for 20 years in nature, it has been recorded to live up to 40 years in confined zones. At present, the total number of zebras in the safari park is 28. 14 of them are male and 14 are female.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park officer-in-charge Rafiqul Islam said that after the establishment of the park, several zebras were brought to the safari park from South Africa through an animal marketing organization. Zebras roam the African Safari section of the park in a large area consisting of bush and grassland. The park is home to zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, gazelles, landcommons, chitras and Maya deer, among others.
