Tensions over the Strait of Hormuz: International Navy wants the Emirates

Published: 12:42 27 March 2026
Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates has launched a strong diplomatic campaign to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy and trade routes. In the context of Tehran's control and ongoing military tensions, shipping in the strait has become risky, which could have a major impact on global trade.
Abu Dhabi has called on allied countries to form a multinational naval task force to deal with this situation. The Emirates has already started discussions with Western countries, including the United States, and has also announced its readiness to deploy its own navy if necessary. The main goal is to ensure the safety of commercial shipping and restore this important waterway to normal.
According to analysts, the direct impact of the ongoing conflict between Iran, Israel and the United States is now falling on the Gulf countries. The Emirates, in particular, see themselves as potentially at risk, as they fear they could become the target of Tehran's retaliatory measures.
In this context, the Emirates and Bahrain have jointly taken the initiative to submit a resolution to the UN Security Council. If the resolution is passed, a legal framework will be created for the formation of an international task force. However, diplomatic circles believe that Russia and China may oppose this initiative.
There is now deep concern among the Gulf countries. They fear that Iran may maintain tight control over the Strait of Hormuz even after the war is over. In such a situation, many countries believe that there is no effective alternative but to ensure the direct guarding of ships by international navies.
Various Arab countries, including the administration of former US President Donald Trump, also agree with this idea. As a result, the proposed international naval coalition to keep the Strait of Hormuz operational has now become not only a strategic step, but also a very important initiative in economic and security terms for the countries concerned.
