Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to attend the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, virtually instead of attending it in person. This has renewed political criticism and speculation about Modi's absence.

In the wake of Modi's visit, questions have arisen - is he avoiding US President Donald Trump? In particular, is Modi not wanting to attend in person because of Trump's praise for peace initiatives on India-Pakistan or the Gaza conflict and bilateral pressure to stop oil imports from Russia?

After Modi's decision, Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh directly said, "Modi's real reason is simple - Trump will be in Kuala Lumpur. Modi does not want him to be cornered in front of Trump." Ramesh also mentioned that the same reason could be behind Modi's absence from the Egypt peace agreement and his absence from Kuala Lumpur.

It is believed in Indian political circles that Modi is avoiding criticism of the government and not wanting to create new controversies before the Bihar elections. On the other hand, two Indian private companies have decided to reduce oil purchases from Russia after Trump imposed sanctions on two Russian oil companies.

Government sources say that oil imports depend on domestic demand and international market prices. If oil imports from Russia are stopped, the price per barrel in the international market could increase by about $2.5.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will participate in the ASEAN summit as India's representative through Modi's virtual yoga. This situation has provoked fresh political criticism and public opinion.
