A ceasefire has taken effect in the Palestinian Gaza Strip, but three ministers, including Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gavir, have resigned. Al Jazeera reported this news on Sunday. The ministers who resigned from the cabinet of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government made this decision in opposition to the Israeli attack.
Under the ceasefire agreement, the ceasefire in Gaza was supposed to take effect at 8:30 am local time, but it took effect three hours later. Israel has alleged that the delay was due to Hamas' refusal to provide a list of its hostages.
After resigning from Israel's hardline nationalist religious party, the 'Jewish Power Party', the party has said that they are no longer part of the ruling coalition. However, the group said it would not seek to topple the government. It called the ceasefire deal “disgraceful.”
Under the deal, Hamas will release three prisoners on the first day, in exchange for Israel releasing Palestinian prisoners. The deal, which began after the Israeli offensive on Gaza began on October 7 after the Israeli attack, has sparked much discussion.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, 46,899 Palestinians have been killed and 110,725 wounded in the Israeli offensive. On the other hand, 1,139 Israelis have been killed in Hamas attacks.
Academics, activists and political analysts have been cautious about the deal, particularly regarding Hamas’s conditions and the next steps in Israel’s compensation.
However, if the ceasefire does not last and Israeli forces refuse to leave Gaza, Hamas has said it will not release any more prisoners after the first phase.
