The process of implementing the long-awaited ninth national pay scale for government officials and employees is progressing rapidly. The government is completing the necessary preparations to implement the new pay structure from July
According to relevant sources, the Ministry of Finance will issue a notification or gazette of the ninth pay scale immediately after the Prime Minister's approval. The gazette is planned to be published within this June.
It has been decided to make a special allocation of about 35 thousand crore taka in the upcoming 2026-27 fiscal year budget for the implementation of the new structure. However, since more than one lakh crore taka is required to implement the entire commission's recommendations, there is a plan to implement it in a phased manner.
According to the proposed pay scale, the existing 20 grades of government employees will remain in place. It has been recommended to increase the minimum salary from 8 thousand 250 taka to 20 thousand taka and the maximum salary from 78 thousand taka to 1 lakh 60 thousand taka.
In addition, there are plans to bring about 9 lakh pensioners under the new structure. In particular, the issue of increasing pensions up to 100 percent has been taken into consideration for low-income retirees.
Government policymakers say that the pay scale can be implemented in three phases, keeping in mind the financial capacity. In the first phase, about 50 percent increase in basic salary is likely to be effective from July 1. The remaining benefits will be implemented in phases over the next two years.
However, some government employee organizations have expressed dissatisfaction with this decision of phased implementation. According to them, the new pay scale should be implemented 100 percent in one phase to keep pace with the current high inflation and cost of living.
The government says that the final decision will be taken after considering the overall economic situation and revenue capacity.
