Police have recovered the decomposed body of an elderly woman named Nurjahan Begum (72) from a house in the capital's Mirpur-11 area. The incident has created a huge sensation in the area due to allegations of not looking for her for a long time and family irresponsibility.
After receiving a call on the national emergency service 999 late on Sunday (May 31), Pallabi Police Station went to the house on Road No. 12, Block C, Section No. 6, Mirpur. Later, the body was recovered from a room in the house and sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Police believe that Nurjahan Begum died about seven to eight days ago. At that time, the body had decomposed and various parts of the body had been damaged due to decomposition.
Pallabi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Hasan Bashir said that Nurjahan Begum lived with her daughter in the house. However, the daughter lived in a separate room. As the old woman did not respond for a long time, the family called a nurse. Later, the nurse entered the room and found her dead. After that, the police were informed and the body was recovered.
The police also said that initially the room was very dirty, messy and neglected for a long time. Lack of care was clearly seen there.
Locals alleged that the matter came to their attention after a foul smell spread and later called 999 and informed the police.
OC Md. Hasan Bashir also said that the deceased Nurjahan Begum has two sons. One of them is a government joint secretary and the other is a teacher at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). They live in separate houses. He also said that other family members have been questioned.
Police said that the exact cause of death has not yet been confirmed. The matter will be clear after receiving the autopsy report.
After the incident came to light, there is a widespread discussion in society about the old woman's long-term loneliness and the irresponsibility of her relatives. According to locals, the role of educated and high-ranking children in such an incident has also been questioned. Police said that legal proceedings are underway.
