Mufti Mohibullah Miyaji, Khatib of TNT Bazar Jame Mosque under Tongi East Police Station in Gazipur, was rescued from the helipad area of Panchagarh Sadar Upazila a day after his 'kidnapping', tied up and naked by the police. On Thursday morning, locals found him lying tied to a tree on the side of the road and informed the police and fire service. Later, he was rescued and admitted to the hospital. He is currently undergoing treatment at Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital. Although he can speak, he is unable to get out of bed.
Lying in the hospital bed, Mufti Mohibullah said that when he went out for a walk after Fajr prayers on Wednesday, five people in an ambulance grabbed his face and forcibly took him into a car. Then, they stripped him naked, beat him and subjected him to various inhuman tortures. He said that he had been threatened in various ways for the past few months. He was asked to speak in favor of Chinmoy Das and against BNP-Jamaat and NCP. He was even offered crores of rupees. But if he refused, he received death threats.
Mufti Mohibullah alleged that even though the kidnappers spoke in standard Bengali, they did not seem Bangladeshi. They said that they would harm all the scholars one by one. Locals said that in the morning, they saw a man lying naked and chained to a tree and informed the police. The police came and rescued him and took him to the hospital. Later, it was confirmed that he was Mufti Mohibullah, the Khatib of Tongi.
The civil surgeon of Panchagarh said that the patient was admitted to the hospital and is being treated. He had already undergone a head surgery and is suffering from kidney and diabetes. Currently, his physical condition is stable. The Panchagarh Superintendent of Police said that after receiving information on 999 in the morning, the police went to the spot and rescued him and admitted him to the hospital. Later, his identity was confirmed and the family was contacted. The family filed a general diary with Tongi police station and the matter is under investigation.
The Panchagarh District Magistrate said that law enforcement agencies are working to quickly identify those involved in the incident. An investigation has already begun. In protest of the incident, leaders and activists of various Islamic organizations held a protest march and road meeting in Panchagarh on Thursday afternoon. The speakers demanded exemplary punishment for those involved in the attack on Mufti Mohibullah and a ban on ISKCON.
