Mourning started when the body of student Ashiq Babu, who was injured in an anti-discrimination protest in Kurigram, reached his village home from Dhaka. He died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Medical College in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon after 28 days of treatment after suffering a head injury during the quota dispute in the district town on August 4. After several rounds of funeral, the burial was done at the local cemetery on Monday afternoon.
As the car carrying Ashik's body reached the school ground near the house, the relatives burst into tears. Mourning continued throughout the house. The local residents were also saddened.
On August 4, elder brother Ashiq Babu and younger brother Atiqur Rahman joined the anti-discrimination student movement together in Kurigram district town. Two brothers were injured in the clash. Later, younger brother Atikur recovered in Kurigram General Hospital, but elder brother Ashikur suffered a serious injury to his face and was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. After a few days of treatment there, he was referred to Bangabandhu Medical College Hospital in Dhaka. Later, Ashikur died there last Wednesday afternoon. The central coordinators of the anti-discrimination movement rushed to the hospital on the news of his death. Ashiq's body was sent to Kurigram at around 9:30 pm on Sunday night at Dhaka Central Shaheed Minar. When Ashiq's body car reached the district town, the district coordinators organized the funeral at Shaheed Minar area on Monday morning at 9:30 am. Later Ashiq's educational institution Panchpir Degree College and Nijbari's school ground next to the funeral after the funeral, he was buried in the local grave. Locals including the family are saddened by Ashiq's death. At that time they demanded justice for the murder of Ashiq Babu.
Abdus Salam, a local resident, said Ashiq was a very good boy. They two brothers went to Kurigram in the anti-discrimination student movement from home and both brothers were injured. Younger brother Atiqur recovered but elder brother Ashiq suffered serious head injuries and was first treated at Kurigram General Hospital and later at Rangpur Medical. After a few days of treatment there, when his condition worsened, he was admitted to Bangabandhu Medical College Hospital in Dhaka. Ashiq died while undergoing treatment there. We demand identification and justice for his killers.
Md. Chand Mia, the father of the deceased Ashiq said, I have two sons and two daughters. Two boys were injured in the anti-quota movement. The younger son recovered but the older son died. I lost all hope. Who do I seek justice from?
The students and their relatives demanded justice for the killers of Ashiq. And to keep the memory of Shaheed Ashiq in the anti-discrimination movement, the principal informed about installing a memorial plaque with 3 days of mourning in his educational institution.
Principal of Panchpir Degree College of Ulipur Upazila of Kurigram, Ajay Kumar Sarkar said that after the dead body of Panchpir Degree College student Ashik reached Kurigram, Janaza was conducted first at Maheed Minar and then at Panchpir College grounds. He was finally buried at his village home after the Janaza. We have declared 3 days mourning for Ashiq's death from college. Besides, it has been decided to make a memorial plaque to keep the memory of Shaheed Ashiq.
Ashiq is the son of farmer Chand Mia of Satvita area of Buraburi union of Ulipur upazila of the district. Mother Hara is the eldest of two brothers, two sisters.
