Bangladesh may be more vulnerable than usual in the upcoming winter season. According to the long-term forecast of the meteorological office, 10 cold waves may hit different parts of the country during the season from December to February, out of which three may develop into severe cold waves.
The forecast released on Sunday (November 2) said that four to seven mild to moderate cold waves may occur this winter. This may bring down the temperature to 6 degrees Celsius in different parts of the country. In addition, there is a possibility of severe cold waves in the northwest, northeast and central regions, while the temperature may drop to 4 degrees Celsius.
Chance of rainfall and low pressure
The forecast given for the month of November has said that there may be more rainfall than normal this month. In addition, three low pressure areas may form in the Bay of Bengal, out of which the meteorological office has expressed the fear that one of them may develop into a cyclone.
From now on, day and night temperatures will start to gradually decrease. Light to moderate fog may fall in some places in the country and river basins from dawn to morning.
Sunny during the day, cold at night
The forecast also states that bright sunlight may be available for 5.5 to 7.5 hours during the day. However, night temperatures will start to drop rapidly, resulting in a feeling of coldness towards dawn.
According to experts
Meteorologist Md. Mominul Islam said,
“The country may receive more rainfall than normal until January. Two to four low-pressure areas may form in the sea, two of which may develop into cyclones. Temperatures will gradually decrease from now on, although day and night temperatures may remain slightly above normal.”
Impact on public life
According to meteorologists, frequent cold waves may have a major impact on agriculture and health in the northern and central regions. The risk of cold-related diseases will increase if there is no advance preparation, especially in poor communities and rural areas.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has urged everyone to prepare for the cold weather in advance and take special care of children and the elderly.
