Since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, member of parliament and BCB president Nazmul Hasan Papon has been in hiding for a long time. He was known as a confidant of the former prime minister. It was impossible for him to perform the duties of the board president in the current context. In the meantime, it is known that Papon has agreed to step down from the post of BCB president.
A director of BCB recently said that Papon is willing to resign from the post of president amid unrest in the sports arena due to the change of power. He is also discussing with the influential directors of the board in this regard. However, no official announcement has been made in this regard yet.
What can happen after Papon's resignation? Bangladesh Cricket is likely to be banned as a result of government interference in the appointment of interim president. However, it is possible to appoint the next president of Nazmul Hasan Papon to avoid the ban to keep the cricket board functioning.
Rumors started then who will be the new president? A few names on the discussion table. Rumors are going on about Syed Ashraful Haque, Nazmul Abedin Fahim and several others. But above all, the name of former cricketer and chief selector Farooq Ahmed is in the discussion.
It is known that Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud had a private meeting with Farooq Ahmed yesterday (Saturday). In the meeting, various issues including BCB constitution were discussed. Farooq has been offered to work on the board there.
He himself confirmed the matter to Dhaka Post today (Sunday). Farooq said, 'I have been asked to work on the board. Told me I took positive. Earlier I resigned from the board, now if the environment is good. If you can do it yourself, why not? I love cricket. There is a meeting with the sports adviser.'
Asked if his name has been heard in the race to become the BCB president, Farooq said, 'I have not been offered the president yet, I can't say right now. I did not get the offer to be the president, asked if I would work. I will think about whether I will be the president or not when he proposes.'
