Lionel Messi celebrated a special night in his Argentina career. The match against Venezuela was his last competitive match in the national team's jersey at home. His family was on the field, with his three sons standing by during the national anthem. The stands chanted "Ole, ole, ole... Messi, Messi!"—an emotional moment in his 20-year career.
"I've always dreamed of finishing like this on home soil. This experience with my people is incredible," Messi said after the 3-0 win.
Asked whether he would play in the 2026 World Cup, he said, "We'll see. We haven't decided yet. My policy is to take it day by day, match by match. If I feel good, I play, if I don't, I don't. I'm still thinking about playing in the World Cup."
Messi added, "The season is over, pre-season and six months of MLS preparation. Then I'll make a decision."
Argentina's final World Cup qualifier will be against Ecuador on September 10. Messi has confirmed that he will not take part in the match, but his decision to play in the 2026 World Cup is still uncertain.
