As part of the electoral agreement between the National Citizens Party (NCP) and eight political parties, including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, an important political decision has been made in Dhaka-11 parliamentary constituency. Jamaat-e-Islami's nominated candidate Atiqur Rahman has announced his withdrawal from the election in favor of NCP candidate Nahid Islam in this constituency. With this announcement, a new dimension has been added to the electoral equation of the opposition alliance in Dhaka-11 constituency.
In a post on the social media Facebook on Sunday (December 29) night, Atiqur Rahman officially announced his withdrawal. In the post, he mentioned that after a long 10 months and 22 days, he was relieved of a big accountability responsibility. He also said that he had made every effort to shape public opinion in favor of the Islamic Movement in Dhaka-11 constituency as per the organization's decision on February 6 of this year.
Atiqur Rahman said that during this long period, he has risen above his personal, family and professional life and remained active in the field and tried to stand by the common people. He claimed that as a result of his continuous efforts during this period, there was widespread support from people of different classes and professions for Jamaat-e-Islami and the scales symbol, which was also reflected in recent surveys.
Atiqur Rahman expressed deep gratitude to the residents of Dhaka-11 parliamentary constituency—which includes Rampura, Badda, Bhatara and partial areas of Hatirjheel. He wrote that within a short period of time, the people of the area have accepted him as their own and the love and support he has received is a unique experience in his political life.
He also highlighted the sacrifices of the leaders, activists and fellow travelers involved in the election campaign in his Facebook post. He especially expressed his gratitude to everyone, recalling the various hardships and labors, including staying up all night putting up posters. He also separately mentioned the courageous and important role of women activists.
At one point in the post, Atiqur Rahman said that if anyone was hurt by any of his decisions or behavior, he sincerely apologized. At the same time, he reiterated his full loyalty and trust in the organization's decisions and called on everyone to work together to build a 'Bangladesh of Justice'.
Finally, he wished NCP candidate Nahid Islam in Dhaka-11 constituency all the best and prayed to Almighty Allah for all his efforts to be accepted. According to political analysts, the announcement of his withdrawal may make the electoral competition in Dhaka-11 constituency more clear and one-sided.
