After a long 17-year wait, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman finally returned to Bangladesh on December 25. There has been great excitement among BNP and its affiliated organizations' leaders and activists over his return to the country after a long exile.
Various discussions and expressions of expectations have started on social media regarding Tarique Rahman's arrival. Along with the general public, many stars from the showbiz arena are also commenting on his return. Even some stars known to be close to the banned Awami League have changed their stance and started speaking in a new tone—which is leading to widespread criticism and debate on social media.
Actress Jyotika Jyoti, accused of attempting to kill a student during the anti-discrimination movement and a member of the 'Alo Asbei' group, wrote in a Facebook post, "Welcome home, Tarique Rahman! 18 years have been a long time—now Bangladesh is no longer a bottomless basket. Welcome to Bangladesh, which has changed under Sheikh Hasina's development. People are thinking of you, Tarique Rahman, who has changed. I hope you will continue the trend of development and work for the comfort and peace of the people of the country."
At the end of the post, wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, she also wrote, "Merry Christmas to everyone. May this day truly be a big one for Bangladesh."
After Jyotika Jyoti's statement was published, there was a strong reaction on social media. Many called the comment 'polygamy', reminding her of her past political positions and activities.
It is worth noting that on Thursday (December 25) morning, the plane carrying Tarique Rahman and his wife and daughter landed at Sylhet Osmani International Airport at 9:57 am. After a stopover there, the plane arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at around 11:40 am.
Tarique Rahman left the airport and joined a reception organized by the party on the 300-feet road. There was tight security and a huge crowd gathered in the entire area surrounding his arrival.
