The two main rival states in South Asia—India and Pakistan—have long been known as adversaries in the military, diplomatic and geopolitical arenas. Tensions between the two countries have reached their peak many times, from the partition of 1947 to the Kargil wars of 1965, 1971 and 1999. However, the way military technology, weaponry, defense strategies and international alliances have changed in the modern era, the comparative picture of the military power of India and Pakistan needs to be re-evaluated.
This report will present a comparative analysis of the military power of the two countries in the context of the present day.
India's Military Power: Extensive and Versatile
🔹 Defense Budget
India's defense budget for the fiscal year 2024-25 is about 76 billion US dollars, which is almost 6 times more than that of Pakistan. This has made India the third largest defense spender in the world.

Tactical nuclear strategy: ready to counter India's Cold Start Doctrine
☢️ Nuclear power
India:
Approximately 160+ nuclear weapons
Triad strike capability
Still committed to No First Use (NFU) policy
Pakistan:
Approximately 165+ nuclear weapons
Following First Use Doctrine By
Strategic in the use of small nuclear weapons (Nasr)
🛰️ Technological and cyber power
India has taken a strong position in space through ISRO. India is ahead in the use of military satellites, Cyber Defense Command and AI technology.
Pakistan is developing the Beidou system and cyber defense with the help of China, but is still lagging behind Indian capabilities.
🌐 International alliances and geopolitics
India:
QUAD (United States, Japan, Australia)
Arms purchaser from Russia and France
Technical cooperation with Israel
Pakistan:
Close ally of China
Military relations with Turkey and Iran
Support of OIC countries
Finally, although India is far ahead in military power, technology, budget and international position, Pakistan is very sophisticated and strategically aware in its defense strategy. Their nuclear First Use policy and tactical missile system can complicate any war situation.
However, both countries need to understand that peace and cooperation are the path to sustainable development, not war. Lasting peace in the subcontinent is possible through improving diplomatic relations and building mutual trust between the two countries.
