The three-day general holiday announced by the government to deal with the situation surrounding the non-cooperation program called by the anti-discrimination student movement has started. Also, the government has imposed an indefinite curfew across the country, which came into effect from 6pm on Sunday (August 4).
This special holiday which started on Monday (August 5) will continue till Wednesday (August 7). During this time all public and private institutions, banks, courts, educational institutions will be closed. Curfew will also be in force indefinitely.
On Sunday afternoon, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Public Administration took these two decisions separately. Meanwhile, mobile internet has been shut down across the country since Sunday afternoon. Broadband internet is on but services like Facebook and TikTok are off.
The government imposed a curfew across the country from 12 midnight on July 19 due to the ongoing agitation. The curfew is in force from the night of July 19, though a certain period of the day is relaxed.
On the other hand, a long march is scheduled to be held in Dhaka today under the call of the anti-discrimination student movement.
Different districts of the country are the battlegrounds of Sunday's clashes around the non-cooperation movement. At least 92 people including 14 policemen have been reported killed so far. Among them, 22 people including 13 policemen in Sirajganj, 8 in Feni, 10 in Dhaka and 10 in Laxmipur, 6 in Narsingdi, 4 in Rangpur-Bogra, 3 in Pabna, Kishoreganj, Sylhet, Munshiganj, Sherpur, 2 each in Magura, Jaipurhat and Comilla and Local hospital authorities have confirmed one death in Barisal, Bhola.
Besides, state buildings, Awami offices, vehicles were vandalized in various districts.
