Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is taking maximum measures to ensure the security of the candidates running for the 13th National Parliament, said DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjad Ali.
He said this while talking to reporters after the 42nd annual general meeting of the Retired Police Officers Welfare Association at the Rajarbagh Police Lines Auditorium in the capital on Saturday (December 13).
When the topic of the recent attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, an independent MP candidate from Dhaka-8 constituency and spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha, came up, the DMP Commissioner said, “Necessary measures are being taken to ensure the security of all candidates running in the election. The police are on the highest alert in this regard.”
When asked about the progress in identifying and arresting the attackers on Osman Hadi, Sheikh Md. Sajjad Ali said, “We are trying to identify the main suspect—the prime target. It has not been 24 hours since the incident. We hope that it will be possible to identify the attackers very soon.”
In response to a question about whether multiple individuals or an organized group were involved in the attack, the DMP Commissioner said, "Nothing specific can be said right now. The police are looking for the main accused and the investigation is ongoing."
Regarding the name of the identified suspect, he said, "It is not possible to reveal any name right now for the sake of the investigation. However, we are looking for him and the public's cooperation has been sought in this regard. We hope that the criminals can be identified soon and brought to justice."
The DMP Commissioner also said that the police are working hard to maintain law and order in the capital and prevent any kind of violence in the run-up to the elections. Along with the candidates, the safety of ordinary voters is also being given utmost importance.
