A nurse on duty at Nabinagar Upazila Health Complex in Brahmanbaria was beaten and cracked in the head by the patient's relatives on charges of delay in providing services. The incident took place at around 1:30 pm on Friday (August 15). The injured nurse Selina Sultana was given first aid and her head was stitched, the hospital authorities said.
According to police and hospital sources, Zarina Begum, a resident of Daulatpur village in Krishnanagar Union of Nabinagar, was admitted to the hospital on Thursday due to respiratory problems. On Friday afternoon, when nurse Selina, who was on duty, was giving Zarina an injection after providing services to a patient, the patient and her son Raihan (24) got into an argument over the complaint that there was a delay in receiving services.
At one stage, Raihan and a few other relatives attacked nurse Selina, beat her and cracked her head. During this time, equipment worth about 50 thousand taka was also vandalized at the hospital.
Dr. Tamim Raihan, the resident medical officer (RMO) of the hospital, said, “The nurse in charge was preparing to give Zarina an injection after providing care to a patient. This angered the patient’s relatives and they attacked.”
After the incident, the hospital authorities filed a case with the police station. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nabinagar Police Station, Shahinur Islam, said, “The hospital’s RMO has filed a case as the plaintiff. Raihan, the accused in the case, has been arrested.”
