The leaders and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement have protested against the snatching of Jubo Dal leader Tariqul Islam from the police station by blocking the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway. They have also demanded justice for those involved in the incident.
They took up positions on the highway adjacent to Dhaleshwari Toll Plaza in South Keraniganj around 12 noon on Saturday. From there, leaflets were first distributed at the Dhaleshwari Toll Plaza on the expressway, after which they blocked the entire expressway. Traffic on the expressway remains closed till the time of writing this report.
According to the report, Jubo Dal leader Tariqul Islam, who is the joint convener of Srinagar Upazila Jubo Dal, was arrested by the police from Srinagar in Munshiganj on Friday. After his arrest, local BNP leaders and activists forcibly snatched him from the police station custody at night. Although they assured him that he would be returned, the police ultimately said that he had not been returned.
Protesting the incident, leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement decided to block the expressway and closed the road on Saturday morning.
Hasara Highway Police In-charge Abdul Quader Jilani said, "The leaders and activists of the anti-discrimination student movement have blocked the entire highway since 12 noon, resulting in traffic jams."
