The trap of modern non-committal relationships: ‘Nanoship’: Momentary happiness or long-term damage?

Published: 12:06 27 April 2026
‘Nanoship’ has come into discussion as a new relationship trend in modern youth society. It is a type of temporary social or emotional communication, where there is no commitment, responsibility or long-term relationship goal. This connection, usually made for a short time through an event, public place or online communication, is known as nanoship. In this, people connect with each other only for momentary pleasure or emotional relief, but there is no depth or stability of the relationship.
From a religious perspective, such relationships are seen as negative. Because, religion asks people to limit their relationships to decency, restraint and a sense of responsibility. Since there is no responsibility in nanoship, it can easily lead to transgression. According to experts, such relationships gradually weaken people's morality and self-control. The tendency to repeatedly form fleeting relationships creates a reluctance to commit to permanent relationships, which can be harmful to the family and the social system in the long run.
Religious analysis of why nanoship is harmful focuses on several aspects. First, it makes relationships irresponsible and consumerist, where people can use each other only as a means of temporary pleasure. Second, it increases the risk of engaging in immoral behavior or sin, because there is no limit or structure to the relationship. Third, it destroys psychological stability; when temporary connections are repeatedly broken, a kind of emptiness and despair are created. Fourth, it weakens the place of mutual trust and faith in society, which is very important for a healthy social structure.
However, the question is, why is such a trend becoming necessary? Sociologists say that the loneliness of modern life, busyness, and fear or reluctance to long-term relationships—these three factors are playing a major role behind the popularity of nanoship. Many people do not want to take responsibility, and they also do not want to be completely alone. As a result, they are choosing a middle ground where they can find temporary emotional companionship, but without making any commitments. In addition, the influence of social media is also important here; the culture of quick connections and disconnections is pushing people towards such relationships.
The solution to this has also been clearly indicated from a religious perspective. First, it is important to practice self-control and restraint. Second, it is necessary to maintain decency and boundaries in relationships. Third, it is necessary to give importance to building legitimate and responsible relationships—such as family and marriage-based bonds. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen moral education through the family, society and the education system, so that young people understand the true value of relationships. Participation in religious and social activities can also play a positive role in eliminating mental loneliness.
All in all, although nanoship is a reality of modern life, it is not acceptable from a religious perspective. This trend of momentary pleasure can be harmful to individuals and society in the long run. Therefore, experts have called for finding a way out of this trend through awareness, morality and the practice of responsibility.
