Veteran actress Basanti Chatterjee in a country of no return

Veteran actress Basanti Chatterjee of Upper Bengal is no more. She was 88 years old at the time of her death. She had been suffering from various physical complications for a long time. According to Indian media reports, she had stomach cancer and a failing kidney.
She had been bedridden for the last six months. In her acting career spanning almost seven decades, she has worked with legendary Bengali artists including Uttam Kumar, Suchitra Sen, and Chobi Biswas. She started her acting career with theater, but later acted with equal skill in films and television serials.
Recently, she was acting in the popular serial 'Geeta LLB'. The serial's co-star Bhaswar Chatterjee said that towards the end, Basanti Chatterjee was suffering severely. In his words, "We feel that she has been liberated with her passing."
He also returned to shooting for 'Geeta LLB' in early 2025. But his physical condition deteriorated rapidly due to a broken rib, and he completely stepped away from acting from then on.
