The nameplate of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman tunnel built under the Karnaphuli river in Chittagong has been removed. After the fall of the Awami League government, the nameplate was first covered with black cloth. It was lifted on Wednesday.

Officials in charge of the tunnel have said that they have done so for the sake of safety. However, senior officials of the bridge department say that their consent was not taken for this. In Chittagong, the officials themselves have removed two nameplates.
Tanveer Rifat, assistant engineer (toll and traffic) of the tunnel said, "We have removed the nameplate for the sake of safety." But the name has not changed.
However, the chief engineer of the bridge department, Kazi Md. Ferdaus told Dhaka Post, "I have heard about deleting the name of the tunnel. But the responsible officials of the tunnel can say why they did this. No permission was taken from us in this regard.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese President Xi Jinping laid the foundation stone of the tunnel project on October 14, 2016. The construction of the tunnel was undertaken with the aim of connecting the two banks of the Karnaphuli River to build a 'One City Two Town' modeled on the Chinese city of Shanghai. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the tunnel on October 28 last year. The tunnel was opened for traffic from the next day.
