The army and police have recovered nearly four crore taka and foreign currency from the residence of Amir Hossain Amur.
The army and the police have recovered nearly four crore rupees and foreign currency from the house of Parliamentarian and Awami League leader Amir Hossain Amur in Jhalkathi which was destroyed by fire. The money in the luggage was recovered from Amur's residence on Ronals Road in the city at around 12:30 pm on Monday. District Superintendent of Police Mohammad Afruzul Haque confirmed the matter at first sight.
According to local people, the district administration and the police, after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday afternoon and left the country, the angry crowd vandalized and set fire to the residence of Amir Hossain Amur Jhalkathi in the afternoon. Later, the fire service personnel tried to put out the fire several times and brought it under control. Around 12 midnight, the locals saw the fire again on the third floor of the building.
On receiving information, the fire service personnel came there and threw water while extinguishing the fire, bundles of money came out from some of the burnt luggage. The fire service personnel informed the matter to the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police. Later, army and policemen came and recovered the luggage. Out of this, they confirmed the recovery of Tk 1 crore undamaged in one luggage and Tk 2 crore 77 lakh partially burnt from the other luggage. Apart from this, the police also said that there will be currency worth around one crore taka of different countries including dollar, euro.
Jhalkathi Fire Service Station Master Md. Shafiqul Islam said, "While extinguishing the fire of many blankets in the third floor room of the building, some bundles of money came out. A few pieces of luggage are also available with it. Then report the matter to the District Commissioner. Then the army and police came and recovered the money.
District Police Superintendent Mohammad Afruzul Haque said that the army has deposited the recovered money at Sadar police station. The matter will be investigated and legal action will be taken.
Meanwhile, the angry mob attacked and set fire to the homes and businesses of various leaders and workers of Awami League and allied organizations from noon to night on Monday. At this time, various businesses including Kumarpatti were attacked and looted. Upazila Chairman Khan Arifur Rahman, General Secretary of Upazila Awami League Hafiz Al Mahamud, Joint Convener of District Jubo League Kamal Sharif and the residences of Awami League leaders were attacked and set on fire.
The leaders and workers of BNP and allied organizations are entering the city with a procession from this Tuesday morning for the victory procession. Many people are entering the city with processions by buses and trucks. Apart from this, the agitating students are also conducting a victory march in the city.
