Siblings drown in Panchagarh pond, area in mourning

Two siblings, Asif (11) and Sathi Akhter (9), tragically died after drowning in a pond in Panchagarh Sadar Upazila. The accident occurred in Kekupara area of Chaklahat union of the upazila on Sunday evening. The incident has cast a shadow of mourning over the family and the area.
The two deceased children are the son and daughter of the deceased Aizul Islam Nender of the same area. They lived with their mother Acia Khatun. Acia Khatun is a laborer by profession and was at work at the time of the incident.
According to local sources, Acia Khatun became worried after returning home after work in the evening and could not find her children. Later, a search was started at various places with the help of family members and locals. At one stage, Asif's body was seen floating in a pond near the house. Later, locals went down to the pond and conducted further search and recovered the body of Sathi Akhter.
Locals believe that they fell into the water while picking mangoes from a mango tree on the bank of a pond. They later died due to not knowing how to swim. Chaklahat Union Parishad Chairman Rabiul Islam confirmed the incident. There is a deep sense of grief in the area over this tragic incident.
