A house belonging to two families was gutted in a horrific fire in Netrakona's Durgapur on Sunday night. An elderly woman named Basanti Rani Saha (80) was burnt in the fire.

The incident took place at the house of Dhananjay Saha and Govinda Kumar Saha in the Sadhupara area of the municipal city. According to locals, they rushed to the spot after suddenly seeing smoke at around 6:30 pm. Later, on receiving information, a unit of Durgapur Fire Service quickly reached the spot and started work to control the fire.

The fire service said that due to the intensity of the fire and the limitations of the house, it was possible to control the fire in about an hour and 20 minutes. Everything including furniture, clothes, books, and documents in the house of Dhananjay Saha and Govinda Kumar Saha was gutted in the fire. Various equipment including the Thai ceiling, electric fan and lights of the newly built house of Sanjay Sarkar next door were also damaged.

Durgapur Fire Service Station In-charge Md. Manzoor Farazi said, “As soon as we received the news, we reached the spot and started working to control the fire. Since it was a tin shed house, it took some time for the water to reach the source of the fire. Thank you to everyone for your cooperation, by the grace of God, the surrounding houses have been spared major damage. Initially, it is believed that the fire started from an electrical short circuit.”

The dreams of two families have been shattered in this fire, but the actions of the people around have averted major loss of life.
