A show cause notice (show cause notice) has been issued to a union BNP leader in Barhatta upazila of Netrokona on charges of multiple irregularities including embezzlement of mosque money, road damage and embezzlement of river lease income.
Accused Nurul Islam Tipon Mia (50) is the co-liberation war affairs secretary of Singha union BNP in the upazila. He is the son of the late Haji Abdul Karim (Chandu Mia) of Majhpara area of Mallikpur village of that union.
On Wednesday (August 6), Barhatta upazila BNP general secretary Ashiq Ahmed Kamal said that a show cause notice was sent to Tipon Mia last Monday (August 4) on charges of violating party discipline. The notice asked him to appear in person within 72 hours and give a written explanation.
According to local residents and party sources, Tipon Mia became the president of the Mallikpur Majhpara Jame Mosque after August 5, 2024, using party influence. It is alleged that he then embezzled the mosque's donations and grants.
Locals also said that he was involved in the recent incident of looting several cars of bricks from an under-construction road in Singha Union. Similarly, he deprived the villagers by keeping the money received for the lease of the river in the area for himself.
The current president of the mosque committee, Nizam Uddin, complained, "Tipon has become the president of the mosque by showing his power even though he does not offer prayers. After that, he also leased the pond of the mosque, which was leased for three lakh taka, in his name, but did not pay any money. No one knows where the donations and grants were spent."
Tipon Mia's younger brother Md. Rukon Mia said, "He has forcibly occupied 140 percent of my land. He is not allowing me to cultivate the land. He has threatened not to leave the land unless I pay the money. Because of this, there is unrest in the village."
Singha Union Jubo Dal convener Azharul Islam Inchan said, “Tipon Mia is involved in various misdeeds using the party’s name, including extortion, land grabbing, road robbery, and embezzlement of river funds. Due to this, the party’s image is being tarnished.” Accused Tipon Mia’s mobile phone was called several times to inquire about this, but he did not respond.
Barhatta Upazila BNP General Secretary Ashiq Ahmed Kamal said, “The allegations against Tipon are very serious. Any misdeed that tarnishes the party’s reputation will not be tolerated. Necessary organizational measures will be taken after receiving the response to the complaint.” He also said, “No one can get away with committing misdeeds under the party’s protection.”
