After a dramatic loss in the previous match, Argentina had to turn around in this match. Iraq had to win to keep their chances of quarter-finals alive. Javier Macherano's team did the necessary work today at the Lyon Stadium. Argentina defeated Iraq 3-1 in the men's football group stage match at the Paris Olympics.
Thiago Almada, Luciano Gundo and Ignacio Fernandez scored for the Latin American team. Ayman Hussain scored the equalizer for Iraq after Argentina's first goal.
Argentina took the first lead in the match in the 13th minute. Almada scored from Julián Alvarez's extended ball. He created another goal chance in the 39th minute of the match, but the ball went near the post. Iraq equalized in first half added time. Aiman sent the ball into the net with a header from inside the penalty box. The striker, who plays in the Qatar league, also scored against Ukraine in the previous match. By winning the match 2-1, the team has also created the possibility of the quarter finals.
However, desperate for 3 points, Argentina scored the second goal in the 62nd minute of the match. Gundo headed the ball into the net from Kevin Zenon's cross. Both came on as substitutes a minute and a half before the goal. Argentina, however, were not completely relieved even with a one-goal lead. Gundo, Nicolas Otamendi and Guiliano Simeone took shots one after the other but could not break the Iraqi defense.
However, the third goal came in the 85th minute in a series of attacks. Ezequiel Fernandez receives the ball outside the box from Zenon. He sent a powerful left-footed shot into the net through the left-hand corner of the post. Argentina left the field with 3 points after keeping their net intact for the rest of the match. In this victory, Macherano's team has risen to the top of the 'B' group's points list with a goal difference. In the other match of the day, the Morocco-Ukraine result will depend on whether Argentina maintains its top spot.
Spain defeated Dominican Republic 3-1 in the match of 'C' group. Fermin Lopez, Alejandro Baena and Miguel Gutierrez scored for the Spanish. With this victory, Spain has almost confirmed the quarter-finals. Spain topped the group with 6 points from 2 matches after a 2-1 win against Uzbekistan in the previous match. No other team has won in this group yet.
