Australia won a Test series in Sri Lanka after 13 years. The last time Australia won the series in Sri Lanka was in 2011. Then this year, Steve Smith's team whitewashed the hosts by winning both the two-match series.
Australia had previously toured Sri Lanka only twice in 13 years. In 2016, they were whitewashed 3-0, and in 2022, they drew the series 1-1. However, this time they won the first Test by an innings and the second Test by a landslide of 9 wickets.
In the last Test in Galle, Sri Lanka scored 257 runs in the first innings. In response, Australia scored 414 runs, where captain Steve Smith and wicketkeeper Alex Carey scored centuries. Then the Sri Lankans were bundled out for just 231 runs.
Two Australian spinners took 30 of Sri Lanka's 40 wickets - Matthew Kuneman (16) and Nathan Lyon (14). Steve Smith, who led the team in the absence of regular captain Pat Cummins, performed brilliantly with the bat and created new history. He became the first Australian to reach the milestone of 200 catches in Tests.
With this historic victory, Australia moved up the points table in the World Test Championship. After 13 years, the Aussies got the taste of a series win on Sri Lankan soil!
