Imams and muezzins are finally getting their salaries in the pay scale: Who is in which grade, how much is their salary?

Published: 08:11 23 January 2026
In a historic move to strengthen mosque manpower management and eliminate long-standing wage disparities, the government has decided to bring Imams, Muezzins, and Khadems of government-run and model mosques under the National Pay Scale 2015.
The decision was officially confirmed through a recently published Government Gazette, which includes mosque employees in various grades of the national pay structure. This marks a major breakthrough in fulfilling a long-standing demand of Imams and Muezzins across the country.
Who Will Receive This Benefit?
According to the government decision, the following mosques are included under this pay-scale facility:
| Included Mosques |
|---|
| Baitul Mukarram National Mosque |
| Government-managed mosques |
| Newly constructed 560 Model Mosques |
Imams, Muezzins, and Khadems working in these mosques will receive their salaries directly from government funds or the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh.
Experts believe this initiative will significantly strengthen mosque administration and ensure professional dignity and financial security for religious service providers.
What About Private Mosques?
For privately or locally managed mosques, salary payment will continue to remain the responsibility of the respective mosque committees. The government decision applies only to state-run and officially approved model mosques.
Positions and Grades According to the Gazette
As per the Government Gazette, mosque personnel have been placed under the National Pay Scale 2015 as follows:
| Position | Assigned Grade |
|---|---|
| Senior Pesh Imam | 5th Grade |
| Pesh Imam | 6th Grade |
| Imam | 9th Grade |
| Chief Muezzin | 10th Grade |
| General Muezzin | 11th Grade |
| Chief Khadem | 15th Grade |
| General Khadem | 16th Grade |
| Other Staff (Security Guards, Cleaners) | 20th Grade |
How Much Salary Will They Receive?
In addition to the basic salary set under the National Pay Scale 2015, Imams and Muezzins—now recognized as government employees—will receive the following allowances:
| Allowance Type |
|---|
| House Rent Allowance |
| Medical Allowance |
| Other Government Benefits |
As a result, their monthly gross salary is expected to increase significantly compared to previous arrangements.
This long-awaited decision is being widely regarded as a historic achievement for Imams and Muezzins. Many believe it represents a crucial step toward formal state recognition and improved welfare for those dedicated to religious service in Bangladesh.
