Suhrawardy Udyan, the heart of the capital, has been bustling since this morning. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has organized a national rally to highlight its seven-point demands. And to make this rally a success, 20,000 volunteers of the party have taken to the streets of the capital since dawn.
High Court, Matsya Bhaban, Shahbagh… Some are crowded, some are disciplined. Everywhere, young men dressed in the same style are seen—some are marking gates, some are showing the way to workers who have come from far away, and some are busy with security and management. Although their faces were tired, there was a sense of responsibility in their eyes.
Masudur Rahman, a volunteer in charge of the Matsya Bhaban area, said,
“We are not professionals, but this responsibility is very big for us. We are ensuring that people can participate in the rally properly.”
As the morning dawns, small processions are gathering at the main gate of the park. Some have come from Chapainawabganj, some from Cox's Bazar. Everyone has one thing on their lips—"We will not stop until our demands are met."
Jamaat has said that 6,000 volunteers are on duty in and around Suhrawardy alone. The rest of the volunteers are stationed throughout the capital and are assisting the rally participants.
The party's main demands for this rally are: creating an environment for free and fair elections, trial of all past genocides, fundamental reforms, implementation of the 'July Charter', elections using the proportional representation (PR) system, ensuring the voting rights of expatriates, and rehabilitation of those killed in the July coup.
What is particularly noteworthy is that this is the first time that Jamaat-e-Islami has organized a national rally exclusively at Suhrawardy Park. For many, this seems to be the beginning of a new political chapter.
According to political analysts, through this event, the party is once again showing its active presence in the field. Although there may be various disagreements, such a well-organized event on the part of a party is undoubtedly eye-catching.
