Everyone should save the garment industry in this transitional period: BGMEA president Ashulia, in our turning point, those who are trying to hinder the development of the country by damaging the garment industry. Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Khandkar Rafiqul Islam said that everyone should unite and stand against them.

He said these things in the speech of the chief guest at the gathering of workers organized to protect the garment industry from the ongoing anarchy and chaos in Narsinghpur area of Ashulia on Wednesday (September 11) afternoon.

Dr. Dewan Mohammad Salauddin Babu, former Member of Parliament of Savar, presided over the gathering of working people. Managing Director of Hameem Group AK Azad, Managing Director of Al Muslim Group Abdullah, Former Vice Chairman of Savar Upazila Parishad Dewan Moinuddin Biplab, General Secretary of Ashulia Thana BNP Abdul Gafur Mia and others spoke at the meeting.

BGMEA President Khandaker Rafiqul Islam said that about 270 factories have been closed in the last one year due to various problems. Even after closing down so many factories, the economy of Bangladesh is surviving on the garment industry and remittances from our diaspora brothers. Now it is time for us to turn around in this transitional period, we stand against those who want to hinder the country by damaging this industry. Today we have 30 years of experience, our factory worker siblings are always with us. Sometimes the problem occurs after a few years. We all solved that problem hand in hand.

He also said that if we do not stand united today, then you have already seen in the newspapers that 10 to 15 percent orders from our country have been shifted to other countries. Countries who want to take away the garment business from this country will not give us much chance to do business in peace. But we have to protect our rights. We all have to join hands and stand united during this temporary disaster. Bangladesh has come here today as we overcame all the problems in the past, today as the president of BGMEA, I appeal to you as the president of BGMEA, please help us so that we can join the work from tomorrow.

In the president's speech, Savar's former member of parliament and co-family planning secretary of BNP. Dewan Salauddin Babu said that after Sheikh Hasina was expelled from the country in the face of the student movement, many cases were filed in different parts of the country. Many of them escaped and took shelter in different areas of Ashulia. All these people have some kind of hand behind this discontent of garments and they are behind the scenes. So I will say to the leaders and activists of the BNP and its affiliated organizations at the ward level, do you also notice what people you do not know do in the area? You question them, confirm their identity. You have to take responsibility for the security of this area.

He also said that many people are saying that BNP leaders are behind the unrest in the garment industry. I am Dr. Dewan Salauddin as a two-time member of parliament and former president of Dhaka district BNP, I want to say that if there is any complaint about us with the intelligence agency, police or army, you can arrest whoever you want. I will not make any request for anyone. Besides, I would request those who are the owners of the house, as there are many garment workers living in your house, you should sit with all of them tonight and tell them to give some time to the owners. Because many orders are going to other countries. There are conspiracies outside the country too, please take responsibility and bring them back to work. Garments should be saved at any cost as they are national property.

Chairman of Hamim Group and former Member of Parliament AK Azad, Chairman of Al Muslim Group were also present at the rally. Abdullah, General Secretary of Ashulia Thana BNP Abdul Gafur Miah, former Vice Chairman of Savar Upazila Parishad and BNP leader Dewan Mohammad Moinuddin Biplab along with about 1000 local home owners and garment factory workers.
