Prime Minister expresses deep shock over death of Zamir Uddin Sarkar

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has expressed deep shock over the death of former Acting President, former Speaker of the National Assembly and BNP Standing Committee member Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar. Tarique Rahman assumed the office of Prime Minister of Bangladesh in February 2026.
In a condolence message released on Sunday, July 12, the Prime Minister prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul. At the same time, she expressed her heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives, colleagues and well-wishers of Zamir Uddin Sarkar.
In her condolence message, the Prime Minister remembered Zamir Uddin Sarkar as an experienced, wise and responsible figure in Bangladeshi politics. She said that Zamir Uddin Sarkar has performed various important responsibilities of the state with honesty and devotion during his long political life.
Zamir Uddin Sarkar was the Speaker of the National Assembly from 2001 to 2009. In 2002, he also served as the Acting President of Bangladesh for a while.
At various stages of his political career, he held several positions, including the Minister of Education and the Minister of State for Land, Foreign Affairs, Public Works and Urban Development. The Prime Minister, in her condolence message, highlighted the experience, wisdom and efficiency of the Zamir Uddin Sarkar in these positions.
Tarique Rahman said that the contribution of the Zamir Uddin Sarkar in developing parliamentary culture, strengthening democratic institutions and establishing a public welfare-oriented state system will be memorable. The Prime Minister also mentioned that he remained steadfast in his political ideology throughout his life on the issue of Bangladeshi nationalism, democracy and establishing the rights of the people.
The condolence message also said that despite long political adversities and repression, the Zamir Uddin Sarkar firmly held onto the party's ideology. Especially, his role in the movement to restore democracy, voting rights and fundamental rights of the people will be remembered with importance in the political history of the BNP.
The Prime Minister said that with the death of Zamir Uddin Sarkar, Bangladesh has lost an experienced politician and a skilled parliamentary figure. His honesty, dedication, political wisdom and long working life will be exemplary for future generations of politicians.
At the end of the condolence message, the Prime Minister prayed to Allah Almighty to grant the departed soul forgiveness and Jannatul Firdous. At the same time, she prayed to give the bereaved family members the strength to face this difficult time.
