History professor Dr. Muntasir Mamun's appointment as 'Bangabandhu Chair' of Chittagong University (CU) has been cancelled. This information was given in a letter sent by the university authorities on October 19.
The letter said that as per the decision of the seventh meeting of the 'Bangabandhu Chair' executive committee held on March 9, 2025, Professor Muntasir Mamun's appointment has been cancelled from March 15, 2023. All the money paid after that date has also been ordered to be returned to the university.
The letter, signed by the university's acting registrar, Professor Mohammad Saiful Islam, stated, "This decision has been approved in the 562nd syndicate meeting of the university."
The university's Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Shamim Uddin Khan, said, "The syndicate meeting unanimously decided to cancel the appointment of Professor Muntasir Mamun. He has been informed of this through a letter and has been asked to return the money received later."
Professor Muntasir Mamun was appointed to the post of 'Bangabandhu Chair' in the 529th syndicate meeting of Chittagong University held in February 2021 and assumed office on March 15 of the same year. He enjoyed all the benefits of a first-class professor. His monthly salary was 1 lakh 39 thousand taka.
The post of 'Bangabandhu Chair' at Chittagong University was created for the purpose of researching the life, work and ideals of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and preserving his memory.
Earlier, in 2019, former Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury, also took charge of this post. However, in September 2020, the university authorities ordered him not to use the title.
