After the Home Ministry announced a ban on all political activities of the Awami League and its affiliates, the Election Commission (EC) has suspended the party's registration. The announcement was made at an urgent news briefing at the Election Commission Secretariat around 9:30 pm on Monday (May 12). EC Senior Secretary Md. Akhtar Ahmed said that the Election Commission has taken this decision in light of the instructions of the Home Ministry. The Senior Secretary said, "Today, the activities of Bangladesh Awami League, including its affiliates and associate organizations, have been banned in a notification issued by the Home Ministry. In view of this, the Commission has decided to suspend the party's registration."
The EC Secretary also said, "A gazette notification has been issued in this regard. Journalists can collect a copy of the gazette from BG Press if they want."
When asked by journalists about the basis or legal basis for the suspension of this registration, he said, "This step has been taken following the notification of the Home Ministry."
This decision has created new tension in the country's political arena. It has surprised political analysts, especially the Awami League, which is known as the party that led the independence movement.
There has been no official response from the central leaders of the Awami League on this issue yet. However, party sources have informed that they are preparing to hold an emergency meeting on the issue.
As the political situation in the country has become unstable in recent times, the Ministry of Home Affairs has taken a tough stance against several organizations. In continuation of this, the government issued a notification banning the activities of the Awami League and its associate organizations. The Election Commission has implemented the legal directive by suspending the registration.
