India has summoned Bangladesh's acting High Commissioner in New Delhi, Nurul Islam, over the tension on the border issue. Diplomatic sources confirmed this information to UNB on Monday.
Recently, Bangladesh has expressed concern over the activities of the Indian Border Security Force and on Sunday summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs to express deep concern. Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Jasim Uddin urged India to refrain from "provocative activities" that could lead to an increase in tension on the border. He said that an agreement has been reached between Bangladesh and India on the construction of a barbed wire fence for security reasons.
The Indian Foreign Secretary said that the BSF and BGB have agreed to jointly cooperate in combating crime and tackling the challenge of smuggling and trafficking along the border. The Foreign Secretary also said that the unauthorized attempts to build a barbed wire fence and the ongoing actions of the BSF have increased tensions on the border, which could be detrimental to the friendly relations between the two countries.
Meanwhile, the Foreign Secretary expressed hope that these issues will be discussed in detail in the upcoming Director General-level meeting of the BGB and BSF.
The India-Bangladesh border is one of the longest international borders in the world and is often the focus of debates related to security, humanitarian flows and safety.
