16 gates of the spillway of the Kaptai power plant in Rangamati will be opened and the water will be released, said the manager of the center ATM Abduzzaheh.
He said, "As the water level of the lake reaches 108 MSL, each gate will be opened by 6 inches at 10 tonight."
When contacted at 11:30 am on Saturday (August 24), the manager of Kaptai Water Power Plant said this.
He said, "In the last two days, there has been no rain in Kaptai Lake and the upazilas around the lake, but the water in Kaptai Lake is increasing hour by hour due to the four consecutive days of rain and the hill slopes coming down from the upstream."
He also said, 'As a result, the water level of the lake will be closer to the tidal limit, so the gates of the spillway will be opened. It will drain 9 thousand cusecs of water per second. Later, considering the situation, the amount of gate opening may be increased.
The concerned engineers of the power plant said that the Kaptai lake is in a danger zone up to 108 feet MSL. When this measure is reached, the water of the lake can be released through the spillway of the power plant at any time.
They also said that currently 32 thousand cfs of water is being extracted through power generation in 5 units in the power plant. This water falls into Karnaphuli. It increases the water level of Karnaphuli.
According to the control room of the power plant, there is currently more water in the lake than required according to the rule curve. As a result, maximum 219 megawatts of electricity is being produced in 5 units of Kaptai hydro power plant. However, maximum power generation of 230 to 240 MW is possible in 5 units.
