President Joko Yudado held the first cabinet meeting in the new capital of Indonesia, Nusantara. Almost all the members of the cabinet were present in that meeting on Monday.
Due to the pressure of overpopulation and air pollution, the name of Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, has risen to the list of the most polluted cities in the world in the last few years. In this situation, President Joko Widado decided to establish a new capital on the island of Borneo to reduce the pressure on Jakarta; The Cabinet also supported this decision.

Construction of Nusantara, located about 2,000 kilometers northeast of the capital Jakarta, began in mid-2022. The area of the island of Borneo where the capital construction project began was completely forested. The total cost of the project is 3 thousand 4 billion dollars.
Joko Widado gave a brief speech before the start of the first cabinet meeting on Monday. In that speech he said, “Today we are going to witness the opening of a new chapter in the history of the country. Our new capital, Nusantara, is a canvas on which we can draft the future of our nation. Not every country has a history of building a new capital from scratch.”
According to Indonesia's constitution, a person can serve a maximum of two terms as president of the country. Widado, popularly known as 'Jokowi', was the country's president for two consecutive terms. He will retire at the end of next October.
Indonesia's presidential election has already been completed. Prabao Subianto won that election. Subianto will make his debut after Widado's departure. He was also present in Monday's meeting.
Subianto told reporters after the meeting that Nusantara's infrastructure work has not yet been completed. He will prioritize this work after forming the government.
“It cannot be completed in a very short period of time. It is a long-term task and a difficult task,” he told reporters.
