At least 21 people were killed and 61 others injured in a massive explosion at a fireworks factory in Changsha, the capital of China's Hunan province. The accident occurred at around 4:30 pm local time on Monday (May 4).

The intensity of the explosion enveloped a large area around the factory in thick smoke. Several buildings collapsed and debris was scattered all around. Advanced technology robots are being used to assist in the rescue work. About 500 firefighters, rescue workers and medical workers are working at the scene.

During the rescue operation, two gunpowder warehouses inside the factory posed a major risk. To control the situation, the rescue team took measures to keep the entire area humid. In addition, residents within a three-kilometer area have been evacuated for safety.

Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He ordered a full investigation and said that those responsible should be held accountable by uncovering the cause of the explosion.

Meanwhile, the police have taken preliminary action against the person in charge of the fireworks company concerned and an investigation is ongoing to find out the real cause of the incident.
