Maldives to ban smoking for Gen Z and beyond

In a historic decision, the Maldives has banned smoking for Gen Z and beyond. Anyone born or to be born after January 2007 will be covered by the ban. The new law applies to all types of tobacco products, e-cigarettes and vaping.

Under the ban, retailers will have to verify the age of the buyer before selling. Selling to minors will be fined $3,200. In addition, people under the age of 21 have been asked to stay away from tobacco-related commercial activities.

The new law also completely bans tobacco advertising, sponsorship and promotion. The law will come into effect from November 1, initially affecting the Generation Z generation. The law applies to both tourists and citizens.

Maldives First Lady Sajida Mohamed described the move as a bold and evidence-based initiative. “This step will break the cycle of drug addiction, prevent disease and ensure a healthy and strong future for the young generation,” he said.

The country’s Department of Health says tobacco use and second-hand smoke are among the leading causes of illness and death in the country. President Mohamed Moujju launched an anti-smoking program last year. As part of this, vaping and e-cigarettes were banned, and import duties and taxes on cigarettes were doubled.

The health ministry hopes the law will play an important role in protecting public health and creating a smoke-free generation.
