US-Iran face-off in Gulf of Oman: US warship retreats

Published: 09:06 24 July 2025
A new tense situation has arisen between Iran and the United States in the Gulf of Oman. Iranian forces claim that a US warship tried to enter their territorial waters. However, after a strong warning from Iran, it was forced to change course, according to the country's state television.
The incident occurred around 10 am local time on Wednesday. According to a report by Iranian state TV, an Iranian military helicopter flew over the US destroyer-class warship USS Fitzgerald, while the ship was trying to enter "waters under Iranian supervision."
Both sides issued warnings to each other. However, the Iranian helicopter pilot repeatedly warned the US ship directly to leave Iranian waters. The report, which included video evidence, claimed that the US warship eventually retreated and changed course to the south.
However, no official statement has been made by the US Navy on this matter yet. Reuters reported that the warship changed course on the orders of Iranian troops, but it was not confirmed which waters it subsequently entered.
Analysts say that the incident is under the shadow of current geopolitical tensions. Just a month earlier, on June 22, the US was accused of attacking a key Iranian nuclear facility during a clash with Israel. Since that incident, military and diplomatic tensions between the two countries have intensified.
Iran has responded strongly to such incidents against the US in the past. In 2023, Iranian forces claimed that they forced a US submarine to surface near the Strait of Hormuz. However, Washington denied that claim at the time.
Since the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf are important sea routes for international trade, such a conflict there could have a major impact on world politics. It is feared that this recent incident has further increased the level of tension between the two countries.
It is worth noting that Iranian media has mentioned the name of the warship as 'DDG Fitzgerald' and claimed that the Iranian forces had clearly ordered it to move south.
International analysts fear that such a military confrontation between the two countries could lead to a more complex situation in the future.
