A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake has struck the Caribbean Sea. The earthquake was felt on Saturday evening (February 8) local time. A tsunami warning has been issued immediately after this. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said that the earthquake's epicenter was about 130 miles (209 kilometers) off the coast of the Cayman Islands, north of Honduras. It struck at a depth of just 10 kilometers (6.21 miles), which could make it even more destructive.

A tsunami warning has been issued for the affected areas after this powerful earthquake. Detailed information on the damage caused by the earthquake has not yet been known. However, experts have advised to be careful.

The US Tsunami Warning System said that a tsunami warning has been issued for the Caribbean Sea and north of Honduras after the earthquake. The agency said no tsunami was expected along the U.S. Atlantic or Gulf coasts after the quake, but it issued a tsunami warning for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

The Pacific Center said the quake triggered a “hazardous tsunami wave” within 620 miles of the coast of the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Cuba, Mexico, Honduras, the Bahamas, Belize, Haiti, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua and Guatemala. This is not the first time a powerful earthquake has struck the Caribbean Sea.

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the Caribbean Sea off eastern Cuba in January 2020.
