After a long wait, Russia and Iran have finalized a landmark 20-year cooperation agreement. Amid growing geopolitical tensions, the two countries have further strengthened their ties. Last Friday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the agreement. As a result, military and security cooperation will increase and both countries will help each other to repel attacks on their territories by external enemies.
Both countries have been trying to implement this agreement for a long time, but due to the current geopolitical situation, it was signed quickly. But the question is, how long will this friendship last?
Russia has come under various international pressures as a result of the war in Ukraine. Western sanctions, attacks on Iranian allies in the Middle East and the fall of Bashar al-Assad in Syria have forced Russia and Iran to come closer together. Therefore, this agreement has become essential for them.
The agreement, in addition to cooperating with Ukraine and Western sanctions, also creates a North-South corridor that will facilitate trade from Asia for Russia. Syria also plays a key role here, with both Russia and Iran working closely together.
Notably, Iran joined the BRICS economic alliance in 2003, and Russia and Iran are working together to build a more inclusive world. However, as the situation in Syria, Iraq, and Ukraine continues to change, only time will tell how long this friendship will last.
