Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Friday that Israel is ready to sign a deal to release hostages from the Gaza Strip. The BBC reported that the Israeli Prime Minister's Office said that the deal is about to be finalized and that a security-related meeting will be held before the full cabinet meeting to approve it.
The Israeli government said that it is committed to achieving all the goals of the war, including the return of all hostages, both dead and alive. The families of the hostages have been informed about the deal and preparations are being made to bring them back.
Earlier, the Israeli government had announced that a ceasefire agreement to end the 15-month war in Gaza had been hit by last-minute complications. However, Netanyahu said today that a security cabinet meeting would be called in the next few hours to overcome these complications and the deal would be finally approved.
According to media reports, representatives of Israel, Hamas, the United States and Qatar have officially signed a ceasefire agreement in Doha. Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani said at a press conference that the agreement will take effect on January 19.
In the first phase, a number of prisoners will be released within six weeks and Israeli troops will be withdrawn from Gaza. In addition, US President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump have separately confirmed the ceasefire.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has said that the cabinet will not approve the ceasefire agreement unless Hamas agrees to all the conditions. However, Hamas has denied this accusation, and senior Hamas leader Izzat al-Rishq has said that they are committed to implementing the ceasefire agreement.
