Interim government pledges to establish peace in Syria

Syrian interim Prime Minister Mohamed al-Bashir said that now is the time to establish peace and stability in Syria. He made the comments in an interview with the Qatar-based media Al-Jazeera after coming to power.

Mohamed al-Bashir took over as interim prime minister after Syria's long-time ruler Bashar al-Assad was ousted by rebels. He is expected to serve until March 1, 2025.

On November 27, rebels led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) launched an offensive against the ruling Bashar government in Syria. In just 12 days of the operation, the rebels ended Bashar al-Assad's two-decade rule. The capital Damascus fell to the rebels and Bashar al-Assad fled the country.

The US broadcaster NBC reported that Bashar al-Assad is currently in Moscow, Russia.

After the rebel victory, HTS chief Abu Mohammed al-Julani, Bashar's prime minister Mohammed al-Jalali and interim prime minister Mohammed al-Bashir sat down to discuss the transfer of power. The process of forming an interim government then began.

Al-Julani said that Syria would now move towards reconstruction and development instead of war. In an interview with Sky News, he said, "Syria is tired of fighting. We are not going to get involved in any more wars. This country will move towards stability."

Al-Julani also promised to bring former senior officials of Bashar's government to justice for war crimes and torture. He said, "We want to build a new, stable and prosperous Syria. We are moving towards peace and development, not war."

Mohammed al-Bashir said in his speech that now is the time for the Syrian people to enjoy peace and stability. We must leave the days of war behind us. We are on the path to building a new Syria.
