1,701 metric tons of potatoes were exported to Nepal in a single day via Banglabandha Land Port in Tentulia Upazila of Panchagarh. On Thursday (November 6), 81 trucks carrying these potatoes crossed the border by road after the port's operations ended and entered Nepal.
Nur Hasan, Additional Deputy Director of the Plant Quarantine Center at Banglabandha Land Port, confirmed the matter at night and said that several varieties of potatoes, including Asterix, have been exported.
He said, "Due to the current high demand for potatoes in Nepal, Bangladeshi exporters are exporting selected potatoes from different districts of North Bengal. After each truck enters the port, the Plant Quarantine Department is issuing clearance certificates after conducting necessary tests."
Earlier, the highest number of 1,575 metric tons of potatoes was exported in a single day. However, Thursday's shipment broke that record.
A total of 44,415 metric tons of potatoes have been exported to Nepal through the Banglabandha land port since January this year, the port authority said.
Local traders said that both farmers and exporters in the northern part of the country would benefit if potato exports continued through the border route.
