The International Crimes Tribunal has taken into account the formal charges against eight people, including the then SP Anisur Rahman, in a case of crimes against humanity for shooting two Chhatra Shibir leaders in a staged gunfight after their arrest in Chaugachha, Jessore.

On Sunday (February 1), a three-member judicial panel led by International Crimes Tribunal-1 Chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder gave the order. At the same time, arrest warrants were issued against five accused and three were ordered to appear in court on February 16.

Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam heard the case for the prosecution at the tribunal. He said that on August 3, 2016, the police arrested student leaders Ruhul Amin and Israfil in Chaugachha, Jessore, on a false case. They were tortured for two consecutive nights without being brought to court.

According to the chief prosecutor's complaint, under the orders of the then SP Anisur Rahman, subordinate police members shot two people in the legs. Later, they were charged with false weapons by filling the wounds with sand and tying them with a towel. Due to the filling of sand, the wounds rotted and at one stage their legs had to be amputated.

Three people have already been arrested in this case. They are the then SI of Chougachha Police Station Akiqul Islam, Constable Sajjadur Rahman and Constable Zahrul Haque. Apart from former SP Anisur Rahman, the other accused are the then OC Mashiur Rahman, SI Mokhles, SI Jamal and SI Majedul, against whom arrest warrants have been issued.
