The real identity and the horrifying background of the 'serial killer' Samrat, who has been in the news for a series of brutal murders in Savar, have come to light. According to information from the Dhaka District Police, the real name of the Samrat is Sabuj Sheikh. For a long time, he used to roam around the Savar area under a false identity, introducing himself as 'King Samrat' or 'Mashiur Rahman Khan Samrat', and would kill homeless men and women whenever he could.
Additional Superintendent of Police of Savar Circle, Dhaka District Police, Md. Asaduzzaman said that the Samrat's main purpose was to establish physical relations and fulfill his perverted sexual desires. For this, he would bring homeless women from different places to abandoned buildings and secluded areas. Later, he would brutally kill them on suspicion, jealousy or allegations of 'immoral acts' for some reason.
Police said that Sabuj Sheikh is a resident of Mosamanda village in Haludiya union of Louhajang police station in Munshiganj district. His father's name is Panna Sheikh. They have three brothers and four sisters. The elder sister is Sharmin, then Sabuj Sheikh and two more brothers and sisters. Their maternal home is in the Barisal area. However, he had been living a vagrant life after being separated from his family for a long time.
In the latest incident, police said that he brought a vagrant girl named Tania alias Sonia to the municipal community center. After learning about the physical relationship of another vagrant young man with the girl, he first took the young man to the second floor of the community center and killed him. Later, he brought Tania to the ground floor and killed her. He also admitted to burning the body after the murder to destroy evidence.
During questioning in court last Monday, Samrat admitted to being involved in six murders. He gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code at the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court in Dhaka. The court ordered him to be sent to jail after a 10-day remand.
Police also said that Samrat often roamed in front of Savar Model Police Station, Upazila Health Complex, Sub-Registry Office, Municipal Community Center and Pakija Mor area. He spent his days asking for money from locals. Although he was often seen with a smartphone in his hand, he always had a button phone with him. He was known in the area for his untidy lifestyle, loud swearing and unusual behavior.
Dhaka District DB (North) Inspector Saidul Islam said that Samrat repeatedly changed his name, address and family information, which created confusion in the investigation. No match was found between the information he gave and the reality. As a result, the police also have doubts about the credibility of his statement.
Savar Model Police Station OC Arman Ali said that in the initial investigation, Samrat has been identified as a person with perverted tastes and a psychopathic nature. The real reason for the murder and whether he is involved in any other crimes are being investigated. It is worth noting that Samrat's name has come up in six murder cases in the Savar area in the last seven months. On July 4, 2024, the body of an old woman was recovered in front of the Savar Model Mosque, and then his involvement was found in the recovery of the bodies of several unidentified women and men in the municipal community center area. These incidents have caused extreme panic throughout Savar and the police have further expanded the scope of the investigation.
