Unknown miscreants cut down about 300 fruiting guava trees of farmer Jalal Uddin in Hariharnagar of Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga due to past enmity. He lost about five lakh taka. The incident took place in the darkness of Saturday night in Hariharnagar village of Simanta union of the upazila.
According to local sources, Jalal Uddin (48) planted guava seedlings on his 25 katha land two years ago. Currently, each tree has borne abundant fruits and there was a plan to sell it after a few weeks. But the miscreants cut down all the trees in the garden in the darkness of the night.
The affected farmer Jalal Uddin said, “I have created this garden by spending about three lakh taka. I have nurtured it like my own child. I was hoping to make a profit because it bore a lot of fruit this year. But when I came on Sunday morning, I saw that every tree had been cut down. We are poor people, we run our lives through agricultural work. Today, everything is over.”
Jalal also said that he had been in a long-standing dispute with Alamgir, son of Samad of Hariharnagar village, over 25 kathas of land. Alamgir had previously damaged his land, cut the fence and tried to kill his children. Therefore, he believes that Alamgir is behind this attack.
Jalal's son Akib Hossain said, "Alamgir beat us several times over a land dispute, held a knife to our throats and threatened to cut down trees. Being a drug addict and powerful, he did not dare to say anything out of fear."
Jibannagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mamun Hossain Biswas said, "After receiving the complaint, the police visited the scene. Necessary action will be taken by investigating the matter."
