600 kg of mother hilsa has been seized in a joint force operation in the Baro Kumira area of Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong. Eleven fishermen were arrested along with two nets used for fishing in the operation.
A joint team of the Sitakunda Fisheries Department and Kumira Coast Guard conducted the operation at around 6 pm on Sunday (October 20). The operation was conducted by Sitakunda Upazila Fisheries Officer Motasim Billah.
Later, in his presence, the seized mother hilsa was distributed among several local orphanages, madrasas and poor families. In addition, the two illegal nets seized were burned in front of the local public.
The owners of the seven boats used for fishing in the operation were fined Tk 95,000 as per the National Fisheries Act 2020.
It is worth noting that during the government-announced mother hilsa conservation campaign, catching, selling, transporting and storing hilsa in rivers and seas is completely prohibited. This campaign is being carried out across the country to ensure the reproduction of hilsa.
